Black History Year - March

Number 55

For those living in and around Washington, DC, come on June 18 at 10am to the National Harbor Aloft, 156 Waterfront Street in Oxon Hill, Maryland for the 2011 DMV Literary Expo.  Also, come to the BUBF - Baltimore Urban Book Fest.  Sunday, April 10 from 3 to 7pm.  It will be held at the Fredrick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park in Baltimore, Maryland.  Some of the authors attending are, Victoria Christopher Murray, Lamarr Darnell Shields, Nicola Mitchell, Kenda Bell and Tamika Newhouse.

Whoa!!! so much going on and so many places to go.  Thank goodness Southwest Airlines opened in Charleston this month.  The prices are cheap (Even though you do wonder, “If they are so cheap, what kind of pilots do they have?  Can those pilots fly while drunk and drugged up! You know they are tired and don’t get paid enough money, just like you and I.  And you know you only get half a can of soda, which has been sitting in the back for weeks, poured into a small plastic cup of ice!!)  I know about flying, I have been flying since I was 16.  My first flight was when I was 16 years old and I won a trip with the Housing and Urban Agency in Washington, DC, to St. Louis with Managers and others on reviewing project housing in that area.  My grandmother was so excited, she has never flown.  As a matter of fact, her son, my uncle Tommy, was in the Navy and I think he had flown a few times, but not her or her daughter, my mother.
The flight was leaving at 9am in the morning and my grandmother made me get up at 5am to take a bath, and I mean one of those “get in the tub and wash from ear to ear, down to the toes and let me see afterwards.”  Do you know what that is like to have a 5 foot tall black woman examine a 6 foot tall girl standing naked outside the tub watching her grandmother give her the look over!! I still cannot believe she did that.  She doubled checked my underwear to make sure no holes was in it, brought new stockings (yes, I had to wear a garter belt, don’t laugh!!!), put on a clean white slip, the kind you got from McBrides, a blue skirt suit with a huge white collar and black patent leather shoes.  She then drowned me in Johnson & Johnson baby powder, Secret deodorant and her favorite perfume, Chanel No. 5.  After that you know she knew I was clean and ready to get on that plane as a lady should look.

When I finally got on the plane, I was treated like a little girl because the outfit made me look the part.  Even the airline stewardess and pilots treated me like a little girl, asking me if I needed some milk and cookies!!! My grandmother would be proud.  She made sure her baby was treated right, like a young girl on her first trip on a plane.
What memory!  Oh, well, now on to books.
VICTORIA CHRISTOPHER MURRAY - THE DEAL, THE DANCE, AND THE DEVIL - $9.99 - - - I have not read this as yet, so you tell me if it’s good.  She is one of the best African American woman writers around and I have read her others.

BRENDA JACKSON - STAR OF HIS HEART - $.95 CENTS - - - I am one of the biggest fan of her books.  Her books are what I call, “Getting thru security and waiting, waiting, waiting to get on the plane, so you might as well read her books because you will be one happily waiting customer to get on that plane and continue to read because you don’t care about how long the security line is, just as long as you can hold on to that book!!!!!

Drop-dead-gorgeous Ethan Chambers loves his life as Hollywood's most eligible and elusive bachelor. Plus, the talented actor has just gotten an offer he can't refuse: a starring role on TVs hit medical drama. But it's the shows sultry makeup and wardrobe director who's got his pulse racing and making him think twice about staying single.
Getting the gig on Paging the Doctor has thrust Rachel Wellesley into the unwelcome glare of the spotlight. She wants to paint the story, not be the story. But when Rachel starts falling for the show's sinfully sexy star, she knows it's time to get her own heart checked. But how can she give up these passionate nights in Ethan's arms? Now, as the cameras roll and her creative vision comes to life, is Rachel finally ready for her close-up with the man of her dreams?
T. R. BRAXTON - DIRTY HANDS - $2.99 - - - Terrell Hawkins, his closest cousin, and his best friend set out to have a good time on a Saturday night. Alcohol, marijuana, and immodest girls who like to partake in both are part of that pursuit. They all expect to be hung over the next day, but they do not expect the tragic accident that will unravel their lives that very night. Nor do they expect their horrible response to embroil them in a struggle to avoid the authorities while growing increasingly distrusting of each other. Terrell and the others quickly learn that dirty hands can lead to desperate acts and that the worst of circumstances can cause even the best of friends to become enemies.
ELLA MONET - CAPPUCCINO NIGHTS - $6.00 - - - The Caffeinated Sequel to the Coffee in My Cup,Cappuccino Nights Will Have You Ordering Another Cup.

Got to stick on one for Black History Year.

Usually I go to my library (I have over a 1,000 books and my daughter has about the same amount), I pick a book I brought years ago, but this particular book will go down as one to read from one generation to another.  It’s a beautifully graphically illustrated children’s book about a young girl and how she faces her battles to be who she is.  A book you should download on your Kindle and iPad and read, read, read, and read more to your child until he/she has it memorized.  I brought it and when my daughter comes home from college, I will read it to her, even if she is 21.  No black child should be without it.  If you don’t have a kindle, iPad, or whatever device, order the book on Amazon for $6.99.  Believe me it will be worth even single time you sit down with your child and read it to them.
You don’t know how many times I tell people to read to their children.  I don’t give a rat’s but how old they are, they are your children.  Your voice in their head is what keeps them going when crap slaps them in the face.  They will start and continue to reading to their children.  What do you have to lose, NOTHING!!!
I know the author and she will be writing more.  Thank goodness, we have her. BUY THE BOOK NOW!!! PLEASE!
